A frame can look simple, but behind its shape, proportions and finish is a combination of material knowledge, precision and experience, throughout a rigorous process of more than 40 steps.

At POENTE, our frames are designed in Lisbon and handcrafted in Portugal, using carefully selected materials and components. Every element has a function. From the acetate that forms the frame itself, to the hinges, rivets and lenses that complete it.

Acetate: The Foundation of the Frame

The primary material in our frames is premium Italian acetate from Mazzucchelli, a manufacturer with a long history of producing high-quality cellulose acetate.

Acetate is fundamentally different from ordinary plastic. Made primarily from cellulose derived from natural sources such as cotton and wood pulp, it offers a combination of qualities that make it particularly well suited to premium eyewear: strength, lightness, dimensional stability and an exceptional ability to be shaped, finished and polished.

But perhaps its most distinctive characteristic is the material itself.

The depth of colour, translucency and patterns found in quality acetate are not simply printed onto the surface. They exist within the material, allowing the colour and character of the frame to remain visible through its edges and surfaces.

This is one of the reasons we choose Mazzucchelli acetate. It gives our designs a richness and depth that conventional injected plastics cannot replicate.

More Than a Shape

The geometry of an eyewear frame is far more precise than it might appear.

The thickness of the acetate, the curvature of the front, the bridge, the relationship between the front and temples, and the positioning of every component all influence how a frame looks and, more importantly, how it sits on the face.

Small variations can change the balance, comfort and proportions of the finished frame.

This is where the experience of the artisan becomes essential. Working with acetate requires an understanding of how the material behaves and how it responds to shaping, heat, finishing and polishing. Precision is important, but so is judgement.

The Details That Hold It Together

A frame is more than its acetate front and temples.

The hinges provide the movement between the front and temples and are fundamental to the durability and feel of the frame. Rivets and other hardware become part of the structure while also contributing to the visual identity of each model.

At POENTE, details such as our multi-barrel hinges and distinctive rivet configurations are deliberately chosen to complement the construction and character of each frame.

They are small components, but they are part of what makes a frame feel substantial and considered.

The Importance of Finishing

Much of the character of a premium acetate frame comes from its finish.

After the frame has been shaped, its surfaces and edges are refined and polished to reveal the depth and clarity of the acetate. This is where the difference between simply producing a frame and properly finishing one becomes apparent.

A good finish is immediately noticeable when you hold a frame in your hands: the surfaces feel smooth, the edges are refined, the acetate has depth, and the frame has a sense of consistency from one element to another.

For us, craftsmanship is found in these details.

ZEISS: The Lenses Matters Too

The frame is only one half of the experience.

POENTE frames are fitted with ZEISS lenses, bringing the same attention to quality to the optical component of the eyewear.

Lenses quality affects far more than appearance. Optical clarity, precision and the way a lens interacts with the frame all contribute to the final experience of wearing a pair of glasses.

We believe the quality of the lens should match the quality of the frame, because there is little point in building an exceptional frame around an ordinary optical experience.

Handcrafted in Portugal

There is a difference between something being manufactured in Portugal and something being crafted by Portuguese artisans.

At POENTE, experienced craftsmen and women work with the materials and components to turn our designs into finished frames. Their knowledge is built through centenary experience. Understanding materials, recognising small variations and knowing where precision, is what matters the most.
